Krishna is one of the most revered deities in Hinduism, the embodiment of the Supreme Lord Vishnu. He is called an avatar — a divine descent of God to earth.

The Legend of His Birth

In times when the earth groaned under the weight of adharma, when demons were born as kings and oppressed people, the heavens called upon Lord Vishnu:
“Descend into the world, for darkness has covered hearts and the light of truth is fading.”

And so Vishnu appeared as Krishna — all-attractive, radiant with divine love.

His mother Devaki was imprisoned with her husband Vasudeva, for her brother, the tyrant Kamsa, feared a prophecy that her eighth son would be his destroyer. He bound them in chains and set guards over them.

But on the night of Krishna’s birth, the prison was filled with light: the chains fell from Vasudeva, the guards fell into a deep sleep, and, guided by divine power, Vasudeva carried the child across the sacred Yamuna River to the village of Vrindavan, where the infant was received by his foster mother Yashoda.

Childhood and Youth

Krishna grew up as a cowherd boy, but his games were lilas — divine pastimes:

  • He defeated demons who appeared in monstrous forms.

  • His flute enchanted hearts, nature, and all living beings.

  • His dance with the gopis, and his eternal bond with Radha, revealed the mystery of divine love — the soul’s longing for God.

Krishna and the Bhagavad-gita

The ultimate purpose of his descent was revealed on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, during the great war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas.

Krishna became the charioteer of the warrior Arjuna. There he delivered the eternal wisdom of the Bhagavad-gita — a song of dharma, yoga, and the immortal soul:

“Whenever righteousness declines and unrighteousness rises, I manifest Myself again and again,
to protect the virtuous, to destroy the wicked, and to reestablish the eternal law.”

Why Krishna Came to Earth

According to the Bhagavata Purana and the Mahabharata, Krishna’s birth served several divine purposes:

  • Protection of dharma — restoring cosmic order when evil prevails.

  • Destruction of demons and the tyrant Kamsa.

  • Giving spiritual knowledge through his teachings and example.

  • Awakening love and devotion (bhakti), symbolized by his pastimes in Vrindavan and his love for Radha.

The Meaning of His Name and Image

  • The name Krishna means “dark,” “black,” but also “all-attractive.”

  • He embodies love, mercy, and joy.

  • He is worshipped as the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, and in Vaishnava tradition — as the original Supreme God, the source of all avatars.

✨ Thus, Krishna is both the miraculous child of Vrindavan, the wise teacher on the battlefield, and the Supreme Lord whose divine play sustains the breath of the universe.
