Lakshmi is one of the most revered goddesses in Hinduism, the embodiment of prosperity, abundance, fortune, and beauty.

Her essence:

  • She grants ārogya — health

  • dhana — wealth

  • saubhāgya — fortune and family happiness

  • and the highest — mokṣa — liberation of the soul

Iconography

  • Lakshmi is usually depicted seated or standing on a lotus — the symbol of purity.

  • In her hands she holds lotuses and vessels of gold.

  • From her palms flows a shower of coins — symbolizing not only material wealth, but also spiritual abundance.

  • Beside her are white elephants, bathing her with water — a sign of eternal prosperity.

  • 🌊 Her origin: she emerged from the Ocean of Milk during its churning, as the embodiment of grace, beauty, and harmony.

📖 In the Śrī Sūkta it is said:
“Where Lakshmi is worshiped, there live happiness, abundance, and sanctity; there suffering and poverty do not enter.”

🙏 Her mantra:
ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः
Om Śrīṁ Mahālakṣmyai Namaḥ
“Salutations to the Great Lakshmi, who grants prosperity.”

Birth from the Ocean

According to the Purāṇas, when the gods and asuras churned the Ocean of Milk (Samudra Manthan), many divine treasures arose from its depths: sacred plants, celestial animals, and heavenly objects.
Then from the waves, radiant like a thousand suns, appeared Śrī Lakshmi, goddess of radiance and eternal prosperity.

She stood upon a lotus, her body glowing with golden light, holding flowers, vessels filled with nectar, and grain. The heavens filled with fragrance, light, and divine music. Even austere sages bowed their heads, for this was the embodiment of cosmic harmony and fortune.

Her union with Vishnu

After her appearance, Lakshmi chose Vishnu, the Preserver of the universe, as her eternal consort. From that moment she became his Śakti — the energy through which he sustains the cosmos.

  • Vishnu — upholds the laws of the universe.

  • Lakshmi — fills those laws with grace and prosperity.

Cosmic meaning of her birth

  • From the depths of chaos (the ocean) arises harmony.

  • True wealth comes not through struggle, but through union.

  • Divine energy always accompanies protection and righteousness.

Thus Mahalakshmi is not only the symbol of gold and material abundance, but also the energy of life, purity, and spiritual light, without which the world cannot exist.
